ABOUT
She finds her motifs in the everyday world and implements them in an unmistakable way. The strength of her hyper-realistic pictures, which are so meticulously executed, undoubtedly lies in the choice of perspective. The viewer is almost always standing behind the person depicted, fascinated by the unknown, often wondering what this person actually looks like. But the rear view also has a long tradition in art history and serves to identify the viewer with the protagonist of the picture.
The people in Sabine Liebchen’s portraits appear self-confident and goal-oriented. Their body language is conspicuously inconspicuous; the images seem to be random snapshots, like those we encounter every day. But it is precisely this banality of the subjects that makes these images, which can be understood as “allegories for them,” so effective.
The artist leaves out everything superfluous; leaves nothing to chance, she abstracts to a certain extent and filters out what is important. The works also lack any geographical reference. The neutral-monochromatic backgrounds, gives the portraits general validity, but also create distance and at the same time an unrealistic atmosphere, which is underlined by the virtuoso painted body shadows and light fields. In this way, Sabine Liebchen creates a clear and transparent reality that also allows a view of the invisible while she captures the magic of the moment on canvas.
