Alexandros Vasmoulakis
Hey Ho! Here we go, ever so high
04/02 - 05/03/2009
With the ambiguous title “Hey Ho! Here we go, ever so high”, Alexandros Vasmoulakis presents his first solo exhibition at a.antonopoulou art gallery on Wednesday, February 4th 2009.
The artist is mostly known by his street art in the streets of Athens, as he has beautified and embellished various buildings of the city; the central building of the Zolotas jewellery shop, the exterior face of the theatre “Chora”, the “Panoptikon” at Psyrri square, the refugee area (also known as “the prosfygika”) and many others.
His works’ main theme is the psychology of his figures. The struggle, the element of the conflict dominates in the pairs of his figures and in each character separately. With his perceptive analysis of his characters, which he achieves through his work, he persuades us that he has penetrated into their mentality by holding a role of a competent and gifted anatomist, of an expressive soul searcher.
The result is figures that do not maroon their mood’s interpretation. They abut on the paper just as if they have bumped after a dynamic flight or as if they are just being born, leaving the spectator to choose the word which is going to characterize them. With his familiar aesthetics, which automatically grabs the spectator’s eye, the artist restricts his characters’ army indoors this time and sheds a more powerful spot light to each character’s voice. His lines remain free, his materials acrylic colour and ink and the background always white in order to underline the characters’ psychology and mood. Faces with wide open and expressive eyes, bodies like smashed crystals, couples and lonely figures open up sharp dialogues with smart cues with the audience.
